| Essaouira’s medina (fortified old town) has recently been declared world heritage site by UNESCO. It is the only one in all of Africa that was urban-planned prior to development in the XVIIIth century and remains the socio-economic center of the province. Sauntering along the white-washed labyrinth you will discover bustling, colorful markets, hundreds of tiny shops with craftsmen showing off precious thuya woodwork and silver accessories, and its active fish market along the port. Relax at one of the little, tucked-away squares lined with cafes, restaurants and art galleries. |
